Generative Engine Optimisation

Your customers stopped searching. They started asking.

Every day, AI assistants answer the exact questions your buyers used to google. Cited measures whether the answer says your name — across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot — and fixes it when it doesn't.

The mechanics

AI doesn't rank you. It decides whether you exist.

Every AI answer is built in four stages. Lose any one of them and you're simply not in the answer. Cited gives you a tool for each stage.

i.

Query fan-out

The AI splits one question into 5–7 hidden sub-queries and researches each separately. Catch-all pages die here; narrow answers survive.

tool → fan-out simulator
ii.

Retrieval

Each sub-query hits the web index. If you don't rank in the top 10–20, you're never even read. Classic SEO still buys your ticket in.

tool → prompt tracker
iii.

Extraction

The AI keeps passages that answer in the first 100–200 words, in self-contained prose, with named entities and checkable claims.

tool → citability audit
iv.

Synthesis

The final answer names the sources it trusted — favouring brands it has seen vouched for by authoritative third parties.

tool → share of voice
The operating loop

Measure. Fix. Monitor. Quarterly, forever.

no. 1

Measure

A curated set of real customer prompts, run against six AI platforms, on schedule.

  • Brand mention rate — the headline metric
  • Citation rate: named vs actually linked
  • Sentiment of every mention
  • Share of voice vs named competitors
no. 2

Fix

The 30% of the work classic SEO never taught you, generated against your own pages.

  • Citability audits with per-factor scores
  • Answer-first rewrites of key passages
  • FAQPage & Organization schema, generated
  • llms.txt drafted from your ground truth
no. 3

Monitor

Because AI answers drift — and sometimes they're confidently wrong about you.

  • Hallucination watch on brand facts
  • Correction briefs, ready to publish
  • 90-day playbook with owner & status
  • Quarterly trend review, honestly reported
Six engines, one strategy

Optimised everywhere your buyers ask.

a.

ChatGPTpriority

Largest audience by far. Recommends brands by name when browsing. Question-form content and FAQ schema are decisive.

b.

Claude

Professional skew, higher trust threshold. Rewards entity-rich pages, named regulators and long-form authority pieces.

c.

Perplexity

The most citation-heavy engine. Date-stamped, source-citing content gets rewarded predictably. Critical for thought leadership.

d.

Google AI Overviews

Cites what already ranks. Your traditional SEO is the strategy here — the two channels reinforce each other.

e.

Gemini / AI Mode

Conversational, multi-turn answers. Benefits specifically from FAQPage schema and comprehensive topic coverage.

f.

Microsoft Copilot

Rides Bing's index into Windows and Office. Bing Webmaster Tools verification is the unglamorous unlock.

The honest bit (it's also the strategy)

An AI citation often produces no click at all — the assistant answers fully and the user never visits. We optimise for being named in the answer, because that's where the buying decision now happens. And we'll tell you when the channel isn't ready for your category yet: measurement discipline beats tool spend, which is why your workspace starts with a free baseline, not an annual contract.

Answer-first, of course

Questions, answered the way we'd want AI to quote them.

a.What is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)?+
Generative Engine Optimisation is the practice of getting your brand named and cited inside AI-generated answers — in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot — rather than ranked in a list of blue links. It is also called LLM SEO, AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) or LLMO. Cited measures your brand's mention rate across those platforms and fixes the content, structured data and entity signals that determine whether the AI says your name.
b.How is GEO different from normal SEO?+
They share about 70% of the work — good content, technical hygiene, authoritative links. The other 30% is different: AI answers are synthesised from 3–7 sources, so there is no position #1, only included or excluded. LLMs reward pages that answer the question directly in the first 100–200 words, in plain prose, with named entities and verifiable claims. GEO also has its own measurement problem, which is why Cited exists: Google Search Console can't tell you what ChatGPT says about you.
c.How do AI assistants actually choose what to cite?+
In four stages. First, query fan-out: the AI decomposes the user's question into several independent sub-queries. Second, retrieval: it searches the web for each one — if you don't rank, you can't be cited. Third, extraction: it reads the retrieved pages and keeps passages that answer directly, in self-contained prose, with verifiable specifics. Fourth, synthesis: it writes the answer and names the sources it trusted. Cited gives you tools for every stage, including a fan-out simulator that shows the sub-queries your content must survive.
d.What does Cited actually measure?+
The headline metric is brand mention rate: for a curated set of real customer prompts, the percentage of AI answers that name your brand. Around it we track citation rate (is your domain actually linked), sentiment of each mention, and share of voice against named competitors — plus a hallucination watch that flags when an AI states something false about your brand, because a wrong answer at scale is worse than no answer.
e.What is a realistic mention rate to aim for?+
For a small brand in a defined niche, being mentioned in 20–30% of relevant AI answers within 12 months is a strong, achievable target — that's roughly the level where AI-cited awareness starts compounding into pipeline. New brands typically start near zero. The curve depends on content quality, entity signals and third-party authority, which is exactly what the 90-day playbook in your workspace sequences.
f.What is llms.txt and do I need one?+
llms.txt is a proposed standard (Jeremy Howard, 2024): a markdown file at your site root that gives AI crawlers a curated summary of who you are and where your important content lives. Honestly: no major AI provider has formally committed to honouring it yet. But implementation cost is near zero, adoption is spreading, and not having one is starting to look like a tell. Cited generates yours from your workspace facts — and yes, this site publishes its own.
g.Can AI-generated content hurt my rankings?+
Published verbatim without review, yes — and fabricated statistics are worse: LLMs cross-reference, and an invented claim that contradicts authoritative sources can get your page excluded from citations entirely. The rule we build into every Cited tool: AI drafts, a human verifies, and every specific claim must be true. If a human couldn't put their name to it, don't publish it.
h.Does Cited use my customers' data?+
No. Cited works entirely on public signals: your published pages, the prompts real customers ask AI assistants, and the answers those assistants give. Nothing in your workspace touches customer records, and the monitoring agent has no access to your inbox, CRM or application data — a boundary we consider non-negotiable.
